Self-hosting!!!

Self-hosting is really nice! I'm building "my own ecosystem" while making sure that everything I work with can be reachable

My region wants to block a lot of websites for some reason and this includes stuff like YouTube and Roblox and conversations.im and Discord and everything by Meta and Telegram and a lot more

Also it's only me who's to blame if something goes wrong or doesn't work, I'm less dependant on uncontrollable factors that way

This website!

Yep! It's all run locally. I'm not going to go over how it works again because I've already done so on /colophon. Slash pages are so useful

Ejabberd

When Telegram was getting rate limited (or something) in my region, my friend group no longer could play Dungeons and Dragons because we were using group voice chat for that, and DM was screencasting our board. To combat that, I've set up an Ejabberd XMPP server, which was a pain. But we've came to another issue of there not being enough good clients for XMPP, especially for Mac and Windows, especially that supported audio/video chat, especially that supported multi user audio/video chat. In the end we found Jitsi and nobody in the friend group is using the XMPP server. There are some fun multi user text chats, though

Agate

Agate is a "very simple server for the Gemini hypertext protocol". About agate: the project's description doesn't lie. About Gemini: coming sometime (placeholder)

Yggdrasil

Ever thought about an alternative to the Internet? The Yggdrasil network is a project for a decentralized routing protocol and has encryption in the routing layer, something that the Internet doesn't have! If we would be using Yggdrasil from the start, there wouldn't be issues with ISPs blocking IPs, and TLS and HTTPS wouldn't be needed: we would just use HTTP

If you've saved a link to my website, please save this link as well

In any case that my website becomes unreachable for over a month, try this link with a Yggdrasil router on

PeerTube

YouTube is blocked, long live video.kayzoka.net! Though it doesn't really help with the blocking, now that Sepia search, joinpeertube.org, spectra.video, Makertube, blahaj.zone are blocked. Listing these is like that chapter from Chainsaw man with the gun demon

Postfix + Dovecot

Now that I have a cool website with a cool domain name, time to replace that email address I had since I was 8 (or younger)! Only after getting through the pain of following a really outdated tutorial on landchad.net did I find out that you can use a custom domain without your own server. Oh well. Self-hosting's fun /s

Forgejo

After writing this page and reflecting on the reasons most of these services are running, I think it's pretty logical that I wouldn't trust Github or any of its alternatives to not get blocked as well. Also, after finding out about ActivityPub from hosting Peertube and finding out about Forgejo on some XMPP MUC, the idea of a decentralized Git sounds very interesting
